Philadelphia, PA – PENN is proud to announce that, through company-matched employee donations, we have the privilege of sponsoring a deserving eighth-grader attending the Philadelphia-based Gesu School for the 2011-2012 school year. Thanks to PENN’s donations, this eighth-grader will be able to successfully finish their final junior high school year and move on to high school.
Gesu School is an Independent Catholic School serving 450 inner-city children in grade Pre-K through 8th. Over 60% of Gesu graduates go on to post high school education in comparison to only a 23% average across the larger Philadelphia area. In order to keep the doors open, The Gesu School must raise a minimum of $3 million annually, with the tuition for each child at $6,000 a school year.
The Facts About The Gesu School:
1. Gesu is on a first-come, first serve basis in regard to admissions. The majority of the 450 kids in N. Philadelphia begin their time at Gesu at least two grades below their scheduled reading level.
2. Over 90% of Gesu graduates complete high school on time, nearly double the city-wide high school graduation rates.
3. 80% of The Gesu School families are single-child households.
4. 25% of The Gesu School families have annual incomes less than $20,000.
